All filters need to be cleaned out periodically. How often a filter will need to be cleaned out will depend on the type, size and age of your filter, and the general condition of the pool.

Under optimal conditions the sand in a Sand Filter should be changed every 5 – 7 years, a Diatomaceous Earth filter should be “Acid Washed” every 2 – 4 years, and Cartridge filters needs to be cleaned every 3 – 6 months.

Cartridge and Diatomaceous Earth filters are much more prone to clogging up, as a result they will need to be cleaned more often. If you are clearing a green pool with anything other than a Sand Filter you should clean the filter after you have cleared the pool. In fact a Cartridge Filter may need to be a few times while clearing a green pool.

1. Turn off the pump.
2. Remove the filter drain plug and allow filter to drain.
3. Remove the filter top.
4. Remove filter grid assembly or tube nest.
5. Thoroughly rinse the grid assembly or tube nest with a garden hose, be sure to rinse away all the old DE.
6. Mix 1 part Muriatic Acid with 4 parts water and rinse grid assembly or tube nest.
7. Thoroughly rinse the grid assembly or tube nest with a garden hose.
8. Put the filter back together.
9. Replace the filter drain plug.
10. Turn on the pump and add DE to skimmer closest to filter system. 

1. Turn off the pump.
2. Remove the filter drain plug and allow filter to drain.
3. Remove the filter dome, if your filter doesn’t have a dome you may have to remove the multiport mounted on top of the filter.
4. Using a wet/dry vacuum suck out the old sand and discard, be careful not to damage the laterals at the bottom of the filter.
5. Slowly add new sand and spread around the inside of the filter tank.
6. Put the filter back together.
7. Replace the filter drain plug.
8. Turn on the pump.

1. Turn off the pump.
2. Remove the filter drain plug and allow filter to drain.
3. Remove the filter top.
4. Remove the filter cartridges.
5. Rinse the filter cartridges with a garden hose.
6. Soak the filter cartridges in a cleaning solution – Note: We recommend getting a spare set of filter cartridges and alternating sets each time you clean the filter.
7. Replace the filter cartridges.
8. Put the filter back together.
9. Replace the filter drain plug.
10. Turn on the pump.
